Yoyo

6 Liesbeek Ave, Cape Town, NA - South Africa, 7925, South Africa

Overview

Yoyo operates a mobile payments and loyalty marketing platform that powers omni-channel payment and loyalty experiences via its point-of-sale acceptance network. Through its commerce API retailers capture basket-level customer data at the point-of-sale to deliver hyper-personalized experiences and targeted marketing campaigns. The platform serves thousands of high-street retail, education and corporate catering outlets and processes more than 2 million transactions per month. Yoyo reports more than 1.25 million users and over 600,000 monthly active users. The company is pursuing integrations into new and existing platforms, including financial institutions and emerging technologies, to expand its presence and provide more choice and convenience to retailers and consumers. As part of that strategy it has entered a commercial agreement to integrate its omni-channel commerce API with Hard Yaka’s Global iD. Yoyo provides a mobile wallet that blends payment, loyalty and discovery. Available on iOS and Android, the app is used in universities, corporate catering environments and fast casual chains across the UK. The company has launched a grey-label “Powered by Yoyo” program with select retailers in the UK and abroad and plans to scale that initiative. It raised a $10M Series A to expand its engineering and product teams, consolidate its lead in the UK and launch its first university partners in the US in the second half of the year. Founded in 2013, Yoyo employs 25 people in the UK and has a growing presence in the US. In 2014 the company participated in Wayra, the Telefónica accelerator. Yoyo is a mobile payments and loyalty app that combines payment and loyalty via a single in-store scan, and also provides a marketing platform for digital customer engagement. The app launched earlier in 2014 and currently handles more than 30,000 transactions per month across 32 food and drink outlets at Imperial College London. Yoyo is rolling out across the Westminster University campus and the University of Greenwich. The company intends to use the new funding to increase the number of retailers using Yoyo in-store, initially focusing on university campuses and high street chains. It also plans to expand its partnership program with point-of-sale software vendors and catering companies. Yoyo was founded in 2013 at Imperial Innovations by Alain Falys, Dave Nicholson and Michael Rolph. Yoyo builds a mobile app that combines fast mobile payments with an automatic loyalty point collection system, aimed at high-volume, low-value transactions. The app integrates at point of sale to provide retailers with purchase intelligence and supports multi-retailer rewards, friend sharing, and personalized marketing campaigns. Yoyo plans to launch in autumn with an initial pilot for Imperial College London students and staff (about 20,000 potential users) across 30 campus retail outlets and select London retailers. The company was founded in 2013 by entrepreneurs from Visa, PayPal and Barclaycard, including Alain Falys, Dave Nicholson and Michael Rolph. Yoyo has raised seed funding to support the launch and pilot, including a disclosed investment from Imperial Innovations Group.
