YPlan

Farringdon, London, England

Overview

YPlan is a mobile app that curates events and enables users to buy tickets to last‑minute activities. Founded in London in 2012 with a second main office in New York, it covers events in San Francisco, New York, Las Vegas and London. The company is pivoting from a direct sales model to a self‑service marketplace that lets event organisers add and manage listings, and plans to add social features and customer analytics for businesses. As part of that shift YPlan has laid off members of its direct sales team while ramping up engineering resources; it now has around 70 employees globally, about 50 in London, and out of roughly 20 NYC employees only six remain, dropping to four by year‑end. YPlan reports over 1 million downloads, 300% growth year‑over‑year, about 1,000 event company and venue customers, and that 60% of bookings are for the day of purchase and 30% for the day before. The company intends to aggregate the long tail of events—pop‑ups and smaller shows—showcasing a curated selection (~25 events) on the app while exposing many more via category drill‑downs. Longer‑term plans include partnerships with travel portals and local publications to broaden distribution of its listings. YPlan is a mobile-only platform that sells curated, last-minute event bookings and pushes personalised recommendations to users via a short list of up to 15 events each night. The app writes snippet-sized descriptions and relies on its recommendation and personalisation engines as its core product differentiator. It works directly with event organisers and monetises by taking a cut of bookings; it is already generating booking revenue. Since launching in November it has featured more than 2,500 events and reports roughly 200,000 active users in London (over 10% of the city’s iPhone owners). Headcount is about 30, with plans to grow to around 100 in the next 12–18 months. Product expansion plans include an Android app later in the summer and a dedicated iPad app, plus international expansion starting with New York and then other U.S. cities and future pushes into Asia. YPlan is a mobile iOS app that curates London highlights and enables last‑minute booking of events such as plays, shows and concerts with a couple of taps. The service is positioned as an "effortless transactions" mobile experience similar to HotelTonight but for events. The founding team—Viktoras Jucikas and Rytis Vitkauskas—draws on experience from Time Out, toptable, Songkick and lastminute.com. The app targets gaps left by Ticketmaster (which stops selling tickets 24–48 hours before shows) and distinguishes itself from editorial rivals like Time Out by being transactional and mobile‑first. Competitors mentioned include WillCall, ScoreBIG, Time Out, Ticketmaster and Groupon, with YPlan emphasizing last‑minute breadth over discount‑focused offerings. Financially, the company has raised $1.7 million (£1.06 million) and counts a mix of VCs and notable angel/industry backers among its supporters.
