Shenmue 3 is a crowdfunded sequel to the Shenmue series, developed to continue the story originally created for the Sega Dreamcast. The project was announced at Sony’s E3 conference and launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund development. Backers pledged more than $1.36 million in under three hours—about half of its $2 million goal—and the campaign hit $1 million in one hour and 42 minutes, making it the fastest game to reach that milestone on Kickstarter. The campaign ultimately reached its $2 million goal in eight hours and 38 minutes and had roughly 16,000 backers at the time of the report. Pledge levels that include a copy of the game start at $29 for PC or PS4 versions. Series creator Yu Suzuki said he has dreamed of making the sequel for 14 years and is balancing ambitious scope with pragmatic development realities.
