Overview
Yugabyte builds an open-source distributed SQL database and offers managed and self-managed cloud database services. Its products include YugabyteDB (free, open source), Yugabyte Platform (self‑managed DBaaS) and Yugabyte Cloud (fully managed DBaaS launched in September). The company positions its technology for hybrid and multi‑cloud environments to help enterprises avoid cloud lock‑in and scale distributed SQL workloads. Yugabyte cites commercial customers including Wells Fargo, Kroger, Hudson River Trading and Plume and says it is approaching 50 commercial customers. Since the Yugabyte Cloud beta last year, about 1,200 organizations have signed up for the managed service. Financially, Yugabyte closed a $188M Series C at a valuation of over $1.3B, coming seven months after a $78M Series B. The founding team—Kannan Muthukkaruppan, Karthik Ranganathan and Mikhail Bautin—previously built the NoSQL database for Facebook Messenger, which informed Yugabyte’s distributed SQL approach. Yugabyte develops YugabyteDB, an open-source, PostgreSQL-compatible distributed SQL database designed for cloud-native, multi-region transactional workloads. Its product lineup includes Yugabyte Platform (self-managed DBaaS) and Yugabyte Cloud (fully managed service on AWS and Google Cloud). The company emphasizes enterprise features such as high availability, horizontal scalability, multi-region deployment and hardened security in the recent YugabyteDB 2.4 release. Yugabyte reports strong enterprise adoption in e-commerce, financial services and telecommunications, with customers including Hudson River Trading, Kroger, Narvar, Turvo, Manetu and Xignite. Its open-source community has deployed over 600,000 clusters, counts more than 170 contributors, 2,600+ Slack members, and issued over 300 certifications in the last 90 days. The company plans global expansion and to double headcount in 2021 to support R&D, sales and customer functions in EMEA and APAC. Yugabyte develops YugabyteDB, a fully open-source, high-performance distributed SQL database designed for transactional workloads in the cloud. The company also offers a private Database-as-a-Service platform for enterprise customers that can run on public, private, or hybrid cloud and Kubernetes infrastructure. It provides a fully managed cloud service currently available on AWS and Google Cloud Platform, with Azure support planned for the future. Leadership recently changed: former Pivotal president Bill Cook joined as CEO, Kannan Muthukkaruppan moved to president, and former Pivotal co-founder Scott Yara joined the board. The founding team previously worked at Oracle and Facebook and helped scale Facebook's database, a pedigree that attracted investor interest. The company has about 50 employees and expects to double headcount in the next 12–18 months as product demand grows. The business recently closed a $30 million Series B and has now raised a total of $55 million. YugaByte builds unified database software that supports both relational and post-relational workloads, offering native compatibility with PostgreSQL plus Apache Cassandra and Redis APIs. The product is designed to let developers standardize on a single distributed database while avoiding cloud vendor lock-in and reducing operational and licensing complexity. Founders Kannan Muthukkaruppan, Karthik Ranganathan and Mikhail Bautin bring experience from Facebook (the NoSQL platform behind Messenger), Oracle and Nutanix. Ranganathan and Muthukkaruppan left Nutanix in 2016 to begin work on YugaByte's database software. The company raised $16 million in a new financing round. With the additional funding YugaByte plans to accelerate investments in engineering, sales and customer success to scale support for enterprises moving business-critical data to the cloud. YugaByte builds an open-source, cloud-native database (YugaByte DB) that unifies SQL and NoSQL paradigms for mission-critical applications. The platform incorporates learnings from Oracle, Apache HBase, Apache Cassandra and Google Spanner and is purpose-built for cloud-native infrastructure agility. YugaByte DB is designed to scale up and down across public clouds, on-premises datacenters and hybrid environments while ensuring zero data loss and always-on availability. Its public beta release is now available and the company positions the product as an ideal complement to Docker and Kubernetes. The company was co-founded in 2016 by ex-Facebook engineers Kannan Muthukkaruppan, Karthik Ranganathan and Mikhail Bautin. YugaByte is headquartered in Sunnyvale, CA.
