Z Factor is a University of Cambridge spin-out focused on discovering new small-molecule drugs to treat Alpha-1-Antitrypsin Deficiency (AATD). The company has identified dozens of molecules that correct the folding defect caused by the Z mutation and shown some candidates can increase alpha-1-antitrypsin levels in an in vivo model of AATD. Z Factor operates as a virtual biotechnology company with no internal operations, using an established network of outsourced drug discovery and development providers, including RxCelerate. The team is selecting the best molecules for development as human drug candidates and expects to reach the clinic with its lead candidate in 2019. Financially, the company previously raised undisclosed seed funding from Medicxi and completed a £7m Series A in 2017. The company is co-located on the Babraham campus just south of Cambridge, UK.
