Founded in 2021 and based in Lugano, Ticino, Zario has built a digital well-being platform and a global app that uses psychology research to create engaging real-world challenges to reduce screen time. Since its app relaunch in March last year the product has recorded over 20,000 downloads and about 1,000 monthly active users, with the majority of users in the United States and India. The team recently launched a feature called Circuit Breaker that opens a decision screen before launching distracting apps, which they say has driven a significant retention increase. Zario’s stated goals include becoming one of the top three Android apps for screen-time reduction and releasing a re-done iOS app. The company is preparing to raise an angel round to validate the business model and intends to pursue a seed round by the end of the year. The prize and funding opportunities won at the EU-Startups Summit are expected to help the team scale the product and advance growth.
