Overview
Zed builds a high-performance, open-source code editor engineered from the ground up for collaboration and speed. The editor is written in Rust and uses GPUI, a GPU-accelerated UI framework created by the Zed team. Zed captures persistent, contextual conversations tied directly to code using character-level permalinks and CRDTs to enable ongoing collaboration between developers and AI agents. The company emphasizes durable links between discussions and specific code sections to transform codebases into multi-dimensional sources of context. Since going open-source in 2024, Zed has attracted about 1,100 contributors and more than 150,000 active developers. The company recently raised capital to accelerate development of real-time collaboration features with AI agents, bringing total funding to over $42 million. Zed provides a multiplayer code editor that lets multiple developers navigate and edit within a shared workspace, enabling nuanced conversations directly inside the editor about any part of a codebase. The product controls the full code-authoring experience, allowing collaboration at the granularity of individual keystrokes and supporting edits whether code was committed previously or not yet saved to disk. The company is launching its Zed editor into beta after an alpha development phase. Led by CEO Nathan Sobo alongside Max Brunsfeld and Antonio Scandurra, the team plans to scale operations and grow headcount. Zed raised $10M in a Series A to support those plans. The round brought total funding to date to $12.5M.
