Zero Grocery
733 Allston Way, Berkeley, CA, 94710, US
Overview
Zero Grocery operates a sustainable online grocery and home/personal care delivery service that eliminates single-use plastics and offers free, same-day two-hour deliveries. Founded in 2019 by CEO Zuleyka Strasner, the company relaunched in January to offer two-hour delivery with no fees or memberships. Since its last raise the company has doubled its team and the number of markets served, including Los Angeles and the Bay Area, and has more than doubled its customer base while growing average order values and retention. Those operating improvements have increased lifetime value and tripled payback on growth investments in 2022 compared with 2021. Zero reports preventing the equivalent of 35,000 plastic bottles or 60,000 plastic grocery bags from reaching landfills in 2021. The company plans to use new capital to open additional hubs for geographic expansion and to invest in customer acquisition and vendor partnerships to scale its sustainable model. Zero is a plastic-free grocery-delivery startup that works directly with suppliers to sell food and household items in jars, boxes and other sustainable packaging and offers next-day delivery. The company operates a membership model: members pay $25 per month for discounted prices and free deliveries; non-members can buy items at higher prices and pay a $7.99 delivery fee. Zero partners with national brands such as Sightglass Coffee, Annie’s and Newman’s Own as well as emerging sustainable vendors like Planet FWD, and maintains just over 1,100 different items in its store. The company began testing in 2018 and officially launched in November 2019 in the San Francisco Bay Area, and is expanding to Los Angeles on February 10. Founder and CEO Zuleyka Strasner says Zero has "many, many thousands of customers" and emphasizes working backwards through supply chains to remove plastic where possible. The company has stated an ambition to be the largest sustainability platform in the country.
