Zong
Route des Acacias 43, Geneva, Genève, 1227, Switzerland
Overview
Zong operates a mobile direct-billing payments service that lets consumers pay for online goods—especially virtual goods—via charges to their mobile phones. The company was spun off from its European parent Echovox earlier in the year, and Echovox founder David Marcus relocated to the U.S. to run the independent business. Facebook selected Zong as the mobile payment provider for Facebook Credits, signaling a major commercial partnership. Zong faces competition from well-backed rival Boku but has emerged as a leader in alternative payments. The company has begun expanding beyond mobile-only billing by adding the ability for users to bill purchases to credit, debit, and prepaid cards. Management says the business needs resources to scale payments volume and execute the card-expansion intelligently.
