Zoopla
The Cooperage, 5 Copper Row, London, Greater London, SE1 2LH, United Kingdom
Overview
Zoopla operates a UK property listings site that aggregates listings and has acquired competitors to grow its inventory. The product includes consumer-facing features such as an augmented reality app, a 'claim your own house' feature, and a 'tempt me' tool to lure potential sellers, plus the ability to list homes for sale through agents. The company reports about 5 million visitors per month. Recent strategy emphasizes marketing growth, including a national TV advertising campaign scheduled to kick off in January. Zoopla has used prior funding to buy a number of ailing competitors (OnOneMap.com, DotHomes.com, Extate.com and the PropertyFinder Group) as part of its expansion. Alex Chesterman is founder and CEO; he previously co-founded ScreenSelect (now LOVEFiLM). Zoopla closed a £3.75 million funding round from venture capital firms Atlas Venture and Octopus Ventures. The raise brings the company’s total funding to almost £5.5 million. Launched less than a year ago, Zoopla says it is one of the top five most-visited property websites in the UK per Nielsen, with over five million visits and 40 million page views in its first 12 months. The site offers features such as 'claim your own house' and 'tempt me', allows owners to list directly or via agents, and targets agents to draw them away from aggregators like Rightmove. Other backers include Nauiokas Park LLP and angel investors Sherry Coutu, Robin Klein, Simon Murdoch, Andy Phillipps and William Reeve. Alex Chesterman is founder and CEO and previously co-founded ScreenSelect (now LOVEFiLM.com).
