Overview
ZTO Express is a Shanghai-based courier and logistics company that runs a partner-based network to provide parcel and delivery services for major e-commerce platforms. Its clients include Alibaba and rival JD.com, and the company has senior management ties to Alibaba’s logistics affiliate (ZTO CFO Huiping Yan previously worked at Cainiao). ZTO went public on the NYSE in 2016, raising $1.4 billion in what was that year’s largest U.S. IPO. The company’s share price closed at $19.30 (an all-time high since its IPO) ahead of the announced deal. ZTO has faced controversy, including a lawsuit alleging it exaggerated profit margins around its 2016 listing, which the company has denied. The announced investment is framed as supporting digitalization and faster logistics to enable Alibaba’s ‘new retail’ strategy that merges e-commerce and offline retail.
