Zulzi operates a mobile app that lets members build grocery lists and have trained shoppers pick and deliver items from nearby retailers. The company was founded in 2013 and launched its platform in 2016; it completed development work on Checkers’ Sixty60 app last year, which brought cash into the business. Zulzi services Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban and limits deliveries to within a 6km radius of the nearest grocery retailer. Operational metrics include roughly 100,000 app downloads, about 2,000 orders processed per day (approximately 70% in Gauteng), and R1-million in sales per day in March—a sixfold increase versus the same period in 2019. The startup charges a service fee of 0%–12.5% depending on the retailer plus a flat R45 delivery fee and has a team of 35, including eight developers.
