Overview
Zumbox operates a paperless postal system that delivers scanned letters, bills and other mail online to users' digital mailboxes. After signup, users can receive digital mail from participating mailers and can switch off paper versions on a per-mailer basis. The service is distributed via partners and licensing agreements, including TransCentra, DST Output, KUBRA, Ricoh Production Print Solutions, Systemware, and a subsidiary, Zumbox Software, Inc. The company launched in 2009 and introduced an iOS app to let users view their digital mail on iPhone and iPad. Zumbox cites a reach of 120,000,000 consumer households based on preset mailboxes but has declined to disclose its active consumer base. It intends to use new capital to fund operations, sales, marketing and development of its U.S. platform. Zumbox offers a free digital mailbox and filing system that delivers digital versions of postal mail to users based on their street addresses. The company works directly with mailers so that, once users verify identity and address and opt in, mail is automatically delivered to their Zumbox. Users can view mail on computers or mobile devices, set reminders, follow links to pay bills or access accounts, print pages, and maintain an archived filing system. The service has been available in beta since December 2008. Zumbox has established a subsidiary, Zumbox Software, to license its platform to postal authorities and commercial entities worldwide. According to an SEC filing the company has raised approximately $17.7 million to date, including a little over $9.7 million in the most recent venture-capital raise. Zumbox created a digital mailbox for every US street address it could find (about 150 million) that lets recipients consult mail sent to a physical location via Zumbox.com. Sending and receiving is free for consumers; businesses are charged two cents postage per address. The service is in public beta and the company offers an API, with an iGoogle widget and a desktop application planned for January. Zumbox says it is compliant with security standards used by the financial, healthcare, and banking industries and verifies sender and receiver identities to limit spam within its closed system. The company acknowledges the service requires internet access and that adoption will take several years as postal mail transitions to digital. Zumbox raised funding to finance the public beta but the article says it will likely need significantly more capital to provide a runway to success.
