Zumper

555 Montgomery Street Suite 1300, San Francisco, California, 94111-2554, United States

Overview

Zumper is an online rental marketplace based in San Francisco that historically connected renters to landlords for long-term leases and has expanded into short-term and hybrid rentals. In 2021 the company saw a significant subset of its users seeking month-to-month or rolling leases; last year Zumper had about 1 million listings and over 70 million users, with roughly one-third seeking short-term options. Zumper has added more than half a million short-term listings to meet that demand and is enhancing its product to serve flexible renters. The business model combines landlord subscriptions for long-term listings and a transactional model for short-term bookings, where Zumper takes an average fee of about 10% of booking value. Management reports double-digit year-over-year revenue growth and says recent capital is being directed primarily to product development. Zumper positions itself as a rental-first platform distinct from vacation-focused marketplaces, while competing with Zillow, Apartments.com and CoStar. Zumper operates a two-sided marketplace that lists available rental properties and offers landlord-facing services, including rent payments and property management tools. The company is focused on expanding its US footprint while continuing to build its platform, data science capabilities, and additional tools for both renters and landlords. Zumper is working on adding lease-signing functionality and more financial offerings for landlords, and is exploring insurance products to provide more peace of mind for customers. The startup reports 100% year-over-year revenue growth and is on track for some 80 million people using its platform in 2020, with about 13 million visitors per month. Within its B2B rental data business, roughly 1 million listings are analyzed monthly. Zumper positions itself against competitors like Compass, Zillow, and CoStar and says it has become the largest privately-backed rentals platform. Zumper operates an end-to-end platform to source, rent out and service apartments across the US. The platform combines apartment search with tenant pre-qualification (credit checks) and a beta instant-deposit feature that lets prospective renters take a unit off the market while touring. Zumper is building landlord tools to generate leases and plans to add rent payment and other transactional services such as utilities sign-ups to increase margins. It reports around 1 million listings, about 8 million monthly visitors, and roughly 250,000 landlords using the service. The company does not disclose revenues or whether it is profitable. Zumper also maintains partnerships to feed listings into Facebook and to handle longer-term rentals with Airbnb. Zumper is a free online and mobile apartment search platform used millions of times a month to find rentals in the U.S. and Canada. It offers a paid Zumper Pro service for landlords and brokers to manage listings and screen tenants, plus paid listing-promotion features. Those paid offerings and other revenue sources have pushed the company to approach nearly $5M in annual run rate. Zumper raised $17.6M in a Series B, bringing total funding to $39.2M and a reported post-money valuation just north of $100M. The company plans to use the funding to scale and improve its core search product and to launch a new end-to-end renter product currently being tested. That new product is intended to shepherd renters through the entire rental process and could allow Zumper to capture broker commissions of roughly 12–15% of a tenant's yearly rent. Zumper is an end-to-end real estate platform that lets renters search, apply to, and close on apartment rentals and provides Zumper Pro for landlords and agents to market listings and run tenant screening. The platform processes over 1 million listings each month from more than 300 data feeds and direct relationships, with roughly 10% of listings submitted via Zumper Pro. Zumper reports over 1.5 million monthly visits, about 70% of which come from mobile devices. The company generates revenue from featured-listing fees—about 20% of landlords pay to feature—and from applicant screening/application fees. Those features drive significant revenue; Zumper said it is making more than $1 million in annual revenue. The company plans to use new funding to grow the team and further develop Zumper Pro and expects to raise a larger Series B in about a year.
