Overview

Zuora provides software to help customers design and manage subscription models and recurring revenue streams. CEO and co-founder Tien Tzuo, an early Salesforce employee, has positioned the company as an evangelist for the subscription approach. Zuora counts customers such as Box, Zendesk and Schneider Electric, and the platform is described as enabling companies to rethink product, service and customer relationships. The company has raised substantial venture and public-market capital to date, giving it increased clout to expand its subscription proposition. Management says it is content to remain private for now and use its non-public status to focus on product and growth without reporting earnings. The company and its CEO characterize the subscription model as transformative across industries and central to its go-to-market message. Zuora offers a SaaS platform that helps companies implement subscription-based pricing, automate billing, invoicing and order management, and manage recurring revenue for media, telecom and software customers. The product targets businesses shifting from traditional ERP systems to subscription commerce and provides billing and finance tools for pay-as-you-go models. Zuora counts customers such as Dell, DocuSign, Gigya, Joyent, Zendesk, Box, Pearson and News Corp, and has nearly 300 employees, half hired in the past 12 months. The company reports a 90% year-over-year increase in subscription revenue, a 55% growth in customer base over the last 18 months, and a sevenfold increase in invoice volume year-over-year. Zuora hit profitability in 2010. Management plans to use new capital to ramp international expansion (it has opened offices in London and Australia) and is contemplating a public listing within a year or two when ready. Zuora provides subscription businesses with a comprehensive cloud platform that handles pricing, quoting, order, billing, payment and renewals. The company serves enterprise customers across industries, including Dell, Box, DocuSign, Radian6 (salesforce.com), Yammer and Zendesk. Zuora is expanding its international footprint in Europe, opening offices and building staff and strategic partnerships across the Netherlands, Germany, France and Ireland. It plans to invest in core research and development to broaden its solution set and deliver an extended product line covering subscription commerce, subscription billing and subscription finance. The company reports having signed over €2 billion ($2.7 billion) in contracted subscription revenue with customers across the EMEA region. Zuora has raised $82.5M in total financing to date and was actively hiring according to its company careers page. Zuora offers a cloud-based billing and subscription management platform that automates metering, pricing, and recurring billing for products, bundles and configurations. The company recently released Z-Commerce for the Cloud to serve cloud providers and extended its platform to Facebook apps. Clients include Rearden Commerce, Ning, Pandora Media, ReputationDefender and HDCloud. Zuora reported rapid growth—over 400% in 2009 and on track to repeat in 2010—and signed more than $1 billion in contracted subscription revenue in the first quarter of its fiscal year ending April 30. The company has been cash-flow positive since early this year. Zuora plans to use new funding to accelerate product development, expand internationally, and hire additional staff. Zuora is a SaaS company that provides online services to manage and automate customer subscriptions and payments. Its Z-Billing Platform handles customer accounts and subscriptions, product catalogs, billing operations, and order management. The platform is delivered a la Salesforce as an on-demand solution and is integrated via APIs so businesses can import legacy billing data and plug Zuora into their sites. Zuora recently launched Z-Payments, which enables customers to actually pay bills and includes PayPal integration. The company is led by executives with backgrounds at WebEx, Salesforce.com, Accenture, DiCarta, Postini and Oracle. A competing startup mentioned is Vindicia.
