Zyl (formerly Comet) is a French startup that uses deep learning to replace the default Photos app by organizing, surfacing and helping users share their photos. The app runs AI-powered algorithms on the phone — except when users explicitly upload photos to share albums — which the company pitches as a privacy advantage over Google and Facebook. Core features include duplicate detection, automatic selection of the best shots (rejecting blurry photos, comparing contrast), collaborative/shared albums, and a forthcoming search feature that surfaces older memories. Zyl calculates users' usual daily photo counts to detect unusually photo-heavy days and is building tools for companies and event organizers to share photo galleries in real time. The team is 16 people and the app has tens of thousands of monthly active users, with about a quarter of new users joining after receiving shared-album invitations. The company raised $1.2 million earlier this year and continues developing on-device AI and expanded sharing use cases.
