Altheus Therapeutics, Inc. is developing Zoenasa® Oral Tablets and Rectal Gel formulations as novel front-line therapies for the treatment of ulcerative colitis and other inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Current front-line therapy for ulcerative colitis is the anti-inflammatory mesalamine (5-aminosalicylic acid; 5-ASA). Zoenasa is a fixed-dose combination of mesalamine plus the powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent N-acetylcysteine to reduce mucosal injury associated with inflammatory bowel disease. Zoenasa will be available as Oral Tablets with an extended- and delayed-release profile for long term therapy in patients with proximal or extensive colitis; as a Rectal Gel for short term therapy in patients suffering from left-sided (distal) ulcerative colitis; and in other specialized formulations. In both animal and human research studies, the Zoenasa combination has demonstrated dramatic efficiacy benefits over mesalamine monotherapy. Altheus believes that Zoenasa will open an important new category in ulcerative colitis, mesalamine combination therapy.
