  • Total Attorneys

    Participated · Equity · May 2012

Total Attorneys provides a combined customer-acquisition marketing platform and a turnkey SaaS practice-management system for small and solo law firms. The company says it has connected thousands of attorneys and millions of consumers and aims to help power the 380,000 small and solo law firms in the U.S. Its practice-management suite includes matter management, time and billing, document management, payments, client portal and the Total Apps marketplace for first- and third-party integrations. The core offering is priced at $1 per month and is positioned to move firms from yellow pages and spreadsheets to digital operations. Management plans to accelerate go-to-market efforts and further invest in the SaaS practice-management platform. Leadership includes CEO Paul Ford and Founder & Chairman Ed Scanlan. Founded in 2002 and based in Chicago, Total Attorneys provides an integrated platform of marketing services, workflow management and a SaaS virtual law office to help small firms and solo practitioners grow and manage practices. The company also operates an industry-focused call center and emphasizes ROI-driven marketing that feeds prospective client information directly into its platform. Total Attorneys acquired Virtual Law Office Technology, LLC in fall 2009 and planned a relaunch of that platform in spring 2011 to position itself as a leader in eLawyering. The firm stresses enabling licensed attorneys to deliver unbundled online legal services and to expand access to justice for lower- and moderate-income consumers. Total Attorneys has an extensive client list and has received industry recognition, including Crain’s Chicago Fast Fifty rankings and placement on the Inc. 5000 lists. The BIA investment is described as growth capital to support the company’s expansion of SaaS offerings and strategic initiatives.

The PacketExchange purchase was funded primarily through a $7.5 million subordinated debt facility provided by BIA Digital Partners and senior facilities from Silicon Valley Bank, with BIA committing additional amounts for future acquisitions.
