Phantom Space Corp. is a Tucson, Arizona-based company developing and manufacturing small satellites and launch vehicles. Its flagship launcher, Daytona, is being developed to carry payloads up to 500 kilograms. Phantom plans the Phantom Cloud small-satellite constellation to provide data backhaul, on-orbit cloud storage, and edge computing, and it also sells small satellites to customers. The company delivered its first ESPA-class commercial satellite to a customer in 2022. Phantom relies on established suppliers for components such as engines (sourced from Ursa Major) while developing tanks, structures, avionics, software and valves in-house to reduce capitalization needs. Founded in 2019 by Jim Cantrell and Michael D'Angelo, the company has raised about $37 million to date and recently closed a bridge round to fund development and manufacturing. Phantom Space develops and manufactures launch vehicles, satellites, and space propulsion systems with a focus on mass production of space transportation hardware. The company is building its first launch vehicle development unit in preparation for stage-level testing later this year. Its first orbital launch is scheduled for Q1 2023 and will use the Daytona rocket. Daytona employs U.S.-produced oxidizer-rich staged-combustion LOX/RP engines built by Ursa Major Technologies in Denver, Colorado. Phantom recently acquired StratSpace, an Arizona-based space systems and flight-hardware developer that has supported 46 space missions and satellite programs, and plans to integrate those technologies. The company intends to use new funds to expand its team of engineers, scientists, technicians, and managers and to broaden its business reach. Founders include Jim Cantrell, Michael D’Angelo, and Michal Prywata.
