Virtual Power Systems, based in Milpitas, Calif., develops Software-Defined Power (SDP) technology delivered via its Intelligent Control of Energy (ICE) hardware and software platform. ICE tracks real-time data center power usage and dynamically allocates energy to servers, racks and systems. The platform aims to increase electrical power utilization and efficiency while lowering costs and, in many cases, increasing data center uptime. VPS positions SDP as an extension of virtualization to the power plane, transforming data center power distribution. The company plans to use recent funding to expand its team, customer engagements, partnerships, and product development across the ICE platform. Financially, the company reported a $12M raise that brings total invested capital to $46M. Virtual Power Systems builds Software Defined Power® and an Intelligent Control of Energy® (ICE) platform that reallocates energy on-demand to racks, nodes, workloads or circuits. Its software uses AI and machine learning to predict and respond to shifts in power capacity and demand, enabling SDP-enabled components (UPS, generators, PDUs, battery backups and PSUs) to react to surges. The platform is used by data center and cloud providers to manage power capacity and avoid over-provisioning by dynamically adjusting delivery as workloads fluctuate. VPS also positions its technology to help enterprise customers reduce power infrastructure wait times and costs. The company collaborates with power infrastructure and IT vendors to integrate ICE into existing hardware and software; recent integrations include Artesyn Embedded Technologies, Schneider Electric, CE+T and VMware. Steve Houck leads the company as CEO.
