C-Capture develops patented solvent-based chemical processes to capture CO2 from emissions across a range of industries. Its core technology is operating in a one tonne-per-day fully integrated carbon removal pilot at Drax power station in Yorkshire. The company plans to scale up through a commercial demonstration plant expected to capture around 100–200 tonnes of CO2 per day. Formed in 2009 as a spin-out from the School of Chemistry at the University of Leeds and led by CEO Tom White, it initially received funding from IP Group. C-Capture has delivered around 20 feasibility studies and has won backing from private investors and the UK Government. Recent investment will support technology commercialisation, further testing of the pilot, and delivery of the larger demonstration plant. C-Capture develops solvent-based chemical processes for carbon dioxide removal. Its unique solvent-based technology will be trialled with real-world flue gas at Glass Futures’ research facility and at NSG Pilkington’s glass manufacturing site in St Helens. The company secured £1.7m in funding from BEIS's Net Zero Innovation Portfolio to support a £2.7m project called XLR8 CCS, delivered with engineering firm Wood. XLR8 CCS will deliver feasibility studies and deploy carbon capture solvent compatibility units (CCSCUs) across the cement, Energy from Waste, and glass sectors. This will be the first time a carbon capture and storage unit has been deployed at a glass manufacturing site. If successful, the project aims to enable commercial-scale carbon-capture facilities across the three industries by 2030 and could capture millions of tonnes of CO2 per year.
