Founded in 2023 at Idealab Studio, NuCube Energy is engineering a high-temperature, no-moving-parts modular microreactor capable of delivering heat up to 1,100 °C alongside reliable electrical output. The reactor is designed for inherent safety, supply-chain efficiency, and ease of licensing, making it suitable for industrial campuses, remote operations, and rapidly growing data-infrastructure loads. Headquartered in Idaho Falls, Idaho, near Idaho National Laboratory, the company is also expanding its presence in Arizona to meet the state’s surging grid demand from semiconductor fabrication, advanced manufacturing, and hyperscale data centers. NuCube’s platform targets replacement of natural gas in energy-intensive industrial processes while offering competitive electricity in distributed environments. The recent infusion of capital will fund materials testing, final design refinement, and regulatory engagement on the path to a demonstration unit. Fractal Systems develops proprietary partial upgrading technologies—JetShear, Enhanced JetShear (EJS) and Acid Reduction Process—to improve bitumen quality, lower viscosity, and reduce diluent needs for producers and midstream companies. Its EJS technology can displace roughly 50% of required diluent, reduce total acidity and olefinic content to exceed industry thresholds, increase export pipeline capacity by about 20%, and cut wells-to-tank GHG emissions by 11%. Fractal completed commercial-scale demonstrations (1,000 bpd facility) and processed over 225,000 barrels during field operations, achieving approximately 50% diluent displacement. The company is preparing a commercial-scale Enhanced JetShear Regional Hub project with an expected capacity of up to 50,000 barrels per day of bitumen feed (70,000–75,000 bpd diluted bitumen). Funding awarded by Emissions Reduction Alberta will support advancement of a construction-ready project development plan over the next two years to facilitate first commercial deployment.
