Piccolo Medical develops the SmartPICC® catheter navigation and tip location system aimed at improving catheter placement, especially for older adults with heart conditions. The company will use a $3 million Commercialization Readiness Pilot (CRP) grant from the National Institute on Aging (NIH) to advance and secure new regulatory approvals for the SmartPICC technology. This CRP award builds on a 2018 Phase II NIH award that supported development and clinical work for the SmartPICC, including a 42-patient, multi-center clinical study of the first-generation system. Piccolo received 510(k) clearance for the SmartPICC System in 2021. The company was spun out of the Theranova medical device incubator in San Francisco and has been funded by private investors as well as Phase I and II NIH grants.
