Overview
EXTOLL GmbH was founded in 2011 as a spin-off of the University of Heidelberg. The spin-off process has been significantly supported by the German EXIST program. The core technologies of the company were developed at the chair of computer architecture of Dr. Ulrich Brüning, who is a co-founder. The IP has been transferred to EXTOLL GmbH. The research group has also developed a method for low-cost mass production of high-density Active Optical Cables (HD-AOC). Such HD-AOC enable signal transmission over longer distances than it would be possible with purely electrical interconnects. This IP has been exclusively licensed to EXTOLL GmbH. Consequently, EXTOLL GmbH has developed a complete product solution, necessary for interconnecting clusters with sizes ranging from a few nodes up to 64.000 nodes.

Participated · Equity · Feb 2016
Testbirds is a Munich-based crowdtesting platform that crowdsources testing of digital products, focusing on quality assurance and usability. The company claims access to over 1 million real users and more than 1.5 million real devices worldwide, enabling tests in real environments. Testbirds says the new seven-figure revenue-based financing from Vienna’s Round2 Capital will be used to further expand its customer base. The exact amount was not disclosed; Round2 tends to focus on companies operating at €5–€25 million ARR and deploys between €1 and €10 million. Since March 2014 Testbirds has raised €11.9 million from investors including Seventure Partners, b2venture and Bayern Kapital. Its last recorded financing was a €750,000 debt facility from Deutsche Handelsbank in late 2019. Testbirds provides software testing solutions for apps, websites and Internet of Things applications, delivered via cloud-based services such as BirdFlight and the TestChameleon test infrastructure. The company works with large-scale clients including Audi, Allianz, Deutsche Post, Henkel and Western Union. Testbirds has offices in Munich, the UK, the Netherlands and Sweden, franchise partners in Hungary and Slovakia, and sales partners in Italy and North America. In February 2016 it raised €2m in venture capital funding. The company intends to use the funds to enhance existing services, add new technologies and products, expand worldwide into new target markets, and increase staff and build teams in new countries. Testbirds was co-founded in 2011 by Philipp Benkler, Georg Hansbauer and Markus Steinhauser. Testbirds operates a crowdtesting platform that lets companies outsource mobile and web app testing to a network of paid testers. The company has more than 25,000 testers and over 35,000 devices in its network, and serves around 150 clients including BMW, Audi, Red Bull and Allianz. It provides functionality, QA and usability testing, summarizes test results, offers recommendations, and adds a consultancy and project management layer for larger clients. Testbirds plans to launch BirdFlight, a free Android app for developers to distribute test apps, and a self-service version of its platform to attract smaller developers. Founded in late 2011 and based in Munich, the company employs more than 30 staff across four European offices and has primarily served German-speaking markets. It will use the new funding to expand across Europe and add additional services and service levels.
