Solarea Bio mines the microbial diversity of fresh fruits and vegetables to develop novel solutions for inflammatory diseases and other applications. The company has assembled a strain catalog of bacteria and fungi, a genomic database, and a computational platform to identify product candidates across supplements, medical foods, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture. Its lead product, SBD111, is a medical food for dietary management of bone loss in postmenopausal women; it showed significant bone maintenance in a mouse model, results were published in a peer‑reviewed journal, and a large efficacy study is ongoing after safety/tolerability comparable to placebo in healthy subjects. A second medical food, SBD121, is designed for dietary management of rheumatoid arthritis and is slated to enter a human study this year. The company intends to use the Series B proceeds to commercialize the two medical foods and advance late‑stage clinical and commercial milestones. Led by CEO Gerardo V Toledo, Solarea is advancing clinical and commercialization efforts from its Cambridge, MA base. Solarea Bio is a Cambridge, MA-based biotech that develops microbial-based solutions to aid human health. The company has built a platform to rapidly identify novel products by generating a large database of complete genomic sequences of microbes derived from healthy foods and applying computational approaches to design synergistic combinations of bacteria, fungi, and prebiotic fibers. These combinations are designed for powerful anti-inflammatory capabilities and have been validated in vitro and in vivo in preclinical mouse models. Its first application and lead program, SBD111, aims to aid dietary management of the metabolic processes that cause osteopenia and osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Solarea plans to use proceeds from its Series A to advance SBD111 through a clinical proof-of-activity trial and to continue discovery and development of its ongoing pipeline. The company is led by CEO and co-founder Gerardo V Toledo.
