  Matteco develops patented platinum-free materials, catalytic coatings, and electrodes for renewable hydrogen production via alkaline electrolysis and AEM, aiming to reduce both capital and operating costs. Its materials claim lower energy consumption in electrolysers, higher current densities, and improved stability and durability. The company is a spin-off from the University of Valencia and part of Zubi Labs. Matteco already sells to customers in Europe, North America and Asia. It plans to open and ramp up a 10,000 sqm catalyst and electrode factory in Paterna (Valencia) to produce the equivalent of 1 GW of electrodes per year. The company intends to grow its team from 30 to 100 employees in 2025 as it scales production and commercial activity. Matteco develops nanotechnology-based catalysts and electrodes for alkaline and anion-exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysis. The company supplies high-performance components intended to increase efficiency and reduce the cost of green-hydrogen production. Matteco is partnering with Spanish manufacturer ARIEMA Energía y Medioambiente (ARIEMA ENERXIA SL) to integrate its components into a new generation of alkaline electrolyzers. The collaboration is embodied in the EMMA project, which has secured public funding to deploy next‑generation electrolyzer technology. Matteco says the step strengthens its position as a world-class supplier and comes on the eve of opening a gigawatt factory in Valencia.
