Coral Vita is a commercial coral reef restoration company that applies techniques such as microfragmentation and assisted evolution to improve coral survivability amid rising ocean temperatures. The company operates as a mission-driven for-profit, aiming to scale restoration without relying on traditional grants. Since 2015 Coral Vita has cultivated over 100,000 corals across 52 species in locations including the Bahamas, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, and has materially boosted local fish populations. In 2021 it was the inaugural winner of Prince William’s Earthshot Prize. Coral Vita recently raised over $8 million in a Series A to accelerate growth. The new funding will be used to expand operations, enhance research and development, and increase overall impact and reach. Leadership frames the work as proving the blue economy is investable, profitable, and impactful as they scale ecological infrastructure. Coral Vita builds land-based coral farms and associated science and engineering to accelerate coral growth and improve survivability. It employs techniques such as coral microfragmenting and controlled tank conditions and is launching R&D into 3D printing and robotics to harden corals for future ocean conditions. The company’s model shifts restoration from ocean nurseries to scalable land facilities that reduce per-coral costs (ocean nurseries cost about $30–$40 per coral; Coral Vita projects about $10 per coral at scale). Coral Vita seeks to diversify funding beyond grants by selling restoration services to customers that depend on reefs—hotels, coastal property owners, insurers, governments, development banks, and cruise lines—and by consumer programs like “adopt a coral.” The firm plans to launch additional farms in other countries over the next two years to establish a global presence and shorten lead times for delivering corals.
