Overview
Indigo is an agricultural technology company that focuses on improving the sustainability and productivity of agriculture. The company focuses on the microbes that have evolved in conjunction with plants over billions of years to optimize their health and maximize their productivity. Indigo believes we are at the forefront of something that serves the needs of both farmers and consumers. For farmers, the yield benefits will help improve grower profitability while increasing our capacity to feed a growing population. For consumers, Indigo can begin to make fundamental changes in how our food is grown; like being more efficient with water, and reducing the use of nitrogen fertilizer and pesticides over time.

Grow Indigo operates a carbon farming platform for smallholder farmers, running four carbon programs across 13 states in India. The company has enrolled about 800,000 acres in its programs and aims to reduce or remove 20 MT of CO2 annually from agriculture. It says it has demonstrated adoption of biological inputs and carbon solutions at scale among farmers. The company is a joint venture between Indigo Ag and Mahyco formed in 2018. Grow Indigo intends to use the newly raised funds to drive the future of sustainable agriculture. To date the firm has a cumulative capital raise of more than $23 million. Grow Indigo, founded in 2018 by Kirthee Thakkar and Rajendra Badrinarayan Barwale, builds nature-based solutions to address climate challenges in agriculture. The company promotes carbon farming for smallholder farmers and sells carbon credits generated through regenerative practices as an alternate source of sustainable income. It has invested in a large library of useful microbes; its proprietary microbial consortium already covers four million acres and helps farmers reduce chemical inputs. Grow Indigo expects to enrol over 3.5 million acres in the next two years and says a 1% increase in soil carbon on 120 million acres would remove over 7 gigatonnes of CO2e. Its digital platforms and network connect with over one lakh retailers and FPOs and more than 10 million farmers, and the company employs about 200 agronomists, data scientists, engineers, technicians, sales staff, and researchers. Financially, the Mumbai-based agritech startup has raised over $6 million in its recent round and has cumulatively raised more than $13 million from investors including Mahyco, Indigo AG, and HNIs.
