FuriosaAI develops the RNGD AI accelerator and a corresponding software stack aimed at making AI compute more power- and cost-efficient for data centers and enterprises. The company says RNGD achieved 2.25x better LLM inference performance per watt versus GPUs and secured a design win with LG AI Research. Furiosa plans to use the new funding to accelerate mass production of RNGD and to lay groundwork for a next-generation chip. To support that scale-up, Furiosa added Jeehoon Kang as Chief Research Officer to lead compiler and software architecture and Youngjin Cho as Vice President of Hardware to accelerate chip development. Founded in 2017 and based in Seoul, the company positions its technology as an alternative to legacy GPU-based infrastructure. Since founding, Furiosa has raised a total of $246 million and is currently valued at $735 million (figures approximate, based on transactions in Korean won). Furiosa AI is a three-year-old startup founded in April 2017 that develops artificial intelligence semiconductor chips aimed at boosting AI performance for big data and autonomous driving. The company was started with three people and is led by CEO Baek Jun-ho. It has received follow-up investments from Naver’s tech accelerator D2 Startup Factory and other institutional investors. Furiosa plans to introduce a silicon chip in 2020 and to cooperate with domestic and overseas universities, companies, research institutes and government. Financially, the company secured W8 billion (about $6.9 million) in the latest funding round. The recent investors include Naver (D2SF), DSC Investment, Korea Development Bank and Truston Asset Management.
