Virurl operates a platform that helps advertisers promote content virally by paying users to share links in exchange for points redeemable for rewards or cash. Advertisers upload the content they want to promote, set a campaign budget and a cost-per-click rate, and users browse and share via social networks or email. In its alpha stage the company attracted more than 40,000 registered users who each have more than 100 Facebook friends, and more than 1,000 content marketers applied to advertise. Any proceeds from Facebook clicks are donated to a charity of the user's choice. The company launched a public beta while announcing it had raised $1.2 million in seed funding. The model has drawn some criticism as "slightly icky," though users sharing content must disclose that it is sponsored. MSNBC.com founding editor Merrill Brown is joining the company as chairman.
