Brave Care is a Portland, OR-based pediatric primary and urgent care medical platform focused on improving healthcare for children. Founded in 2019 and led by founders Dr. Corey Fish, Darius Monsef, Maryam Taheri and Asa Miller, the company is a Y Combinator graduate. Brave Care combines brick-and-mortar clinics with a technology and data platform, offering 12-hour clinic access plus 24/7 remote care via a nurse line and the Brave Care Parent Mobile App. It currently operates three clinics in Portland, OR and Fayetteville, NC, with additional clinics planned in Austin, TX and Portland. The company raised $25M in a Series B to accelerate growth and expand operations. Mednax led the round and its Chief Development Officer, Dr. Jim Swift, joined Brave Care’s board. Brave Care operates a comprehensive pediatric care model that combines 24/7 remote care via its Parent App with primary and urgent care clinics (open 10am–10pm, 365 days a year) and on-site pharmacies. The company emphasizes a provider-first technology stack intended to give clinicians more time to focus on parents and children during visits. Brave Care currently operates two primary and urgent care clinics in Portland, OR. The company plans to expand its clinic footprint to Beaverton, OR, Austin, TX, and North Carolina later in 2021. To support that expansion it will hire 100 employees over the next nine months. Financially, Brave Care closed a $10M Series A to fund clinic growth and continued enhancement of its complete care technology. Brave Care operates urgent care centers for children and is building technology to give parents access to pediatric care advice at all hours to help decide whether to visit a clinic or hospital. The company relaunched in June out of Pacific Crest Children’s Urgent Care; Dr. Corey Fish serves as chief medical officer and Darius Monsef leads the business. Brave Care recently graduated from Y Combinator and announced a $1.4M seed round when it came out of stealth. It has since raised an additional $5.2M and will use the fresh capital to open several clinics in the Portland region over the next 18 months and continue developing its tech. The startup employs 15 people and is hiring. Brave Care operates an urgent care facility focused exclusively on children, with kid-friendly waiting rooms, child-sized instruments, and practices such as numbing gels and liquid medicines to reduce trauma. The clinic positions itself between a child’s regular doctor and the emergency room and costs, on average, about 80% less than a pediatric ER visit. Founders Darius Monsef and Dr. Corey A. Fish launched the concept after personal experiences seeking pediatric urgent care and brought on COO Maryam Taheri and CTO Asa Miller. For now Brave Care has a single location in the Portland area and is focused on delivering high-quality care there. The company plans to expand the brand to many locations across the country and is developing a self-guided triage tool for parents, with a future asynchronous telemedicine product under consideration. Brave Care is in the current Y Combinator class and has raised a total of $1.45 million in funding.
