Soma sells design-forward glass water carafes and the only water filters the company says are built entirely from plant-based materials. The company has secured retail distribution with Williams Sonoma and is rolling out across the U.S. Soma continues to donate to charity: water with each filter purchase and offers a special canary yellow carafe that donates an additional $14.50. Management has adjusted pricing since launch and now sells a standard carafe with one filter for $59 and replacement filters for $12.99, with prepaid discounts available. The business benefited from a successful Kickstarter and an earlier $3.7M seed round, and leadership says new capital will be used for new product development. Soma makes glass carafes fitted with biodegradable water filters sold via a subscription service. Customers buy the carafe and starter filter for $87 and receive replacement filters every two months for $14.99. For each filter sold Soma donates money to Charity: Water, though the company declined to disclose the donation amount per purchase. The company raised $150,000 from over 2,000 Kickstarter backers in 2012 and has completed seed financings including a $1.2M round and a recent $3.7M seed. Soma plans to use the new funding to build its team, expand marketing, and develop new products, with shipping to Kickstarter backers in August and public sales launching in September. CEO Mike Del Ponte says Soma maintains healthy margins through direct-to-consumer production despite the costs of sustainable materials and donations.
