  • German Bionic

    Led · Series A · Dec 2023

German Bionic designs and manufactures electrically powered back exoskeletons and wearable technologies that apply self-learning AI to support lifting movements and prevent poor posture. Its product line includes the Apogee and Apogee+, billed as AI-based, fully-connected robotic wearables; the Apogee+ was launched last summer and is tailored to the care sector. The Apogee+ features a closed unibody design that is easy to disinfect and an ergonomic early warning system that supplies real-time data to protect employees’ health and reduce accidents. The company serves customers across industry and logistics (DPD, Dachser, Fiege), large retailers (Canadian Tire, Currys), major airports, and healthcare institutions (Charité, BG Unfallklinikum Murnau). German Bionic says it will use new funding to scale market activities and ramp production to meet rising demand from industry, logistics, and healthcare. The company is based in Bavaria, Germany, and is intensifying collaboration with industrialization partner Mubea to expand capacity and production. German Bionic develops AI-driven robotic exoskeletons and other smart wearable devices designed to assist logistics and care workers with physically strenuous tasks. Its exosuits provide mechanical support for lifting and carrying and include a smart assistance system that warns users if they lift incorrectly or should take a break. In optimal conditions the exosuits can pick up physical goods weighing up to 30 kilogrammes. The company's technology was named a Best of Innovation product for the forthcoming Consumer Electronics Show in the US. German Bionic has agreed €15 million in non-dilutive venture debt from the European Investment Bank, supported by the EU's InvestEU guarantee programme, to sustain its runway. Further product innovations are expected to be announced in early 2023, and CEO Armin Schmidt highlighted the suits' role in reducing exhaustion, accidents and time off work. German Bionic, based in Augsburg, Germany, develops the Cray X, a connected industrial exoskeleton that can compensate up to 30 kg per lifting movement. The company pairs its hardware with a cloud-based software platform, German Bionic IO, to optimize and enable self-learning improvements in use. German Bionic says customers include a big logistics player, industrial producers, infrastructure hubs and highlights Stuttgart Airport on its site. The startup plans to use new funding to build out both its business and its technology — hardware and cloud software. Analysts quoted by the company project the exoskeleton market could be worth as much as $20 billion by 2030. Previously the company had raised $3.5 million in seed funding from IT Farm, Atlantic Labs and individual investors.
