Red Robot Labs develops location-aware, mafia-themed role-playing games for mobile and operates the R2 gaming platform. Its flagship title, Life is Crime, emphasizes location-based turf battles where players rise to become regional mob bosses. The studio launched in early 2011 and is led by CEO Mike Ouye with Pete Hawley as chief product officer. Life is Crime had a strong start on Android—holding in the top 25 grossing on Google Play—but sits in the 200s on iOS. Red Robot is trying to build a platform model to reduce hits-driven risk and plans to expand into Asia via a partnership with Next Media. Next Media is investing $5M to build titles on R2 and to support an Asian rollout of Life is Crime in Hong Kong, followed by Taiwan and Japan. Prior to this investment, Red Robot had raised more than $10M from investors including Benchmark Capital, Playdom co-founder Rick Thompson, Chamath Palihapitiya, and Shasta Ventures. Red Robot Labs develops location-based mobile games, with flagship title Life Is Crime launched on Android. The company debuted Life Is Crime at PAX in Seattle, where players committed roughly 20,000 virtual crimes over the weekend; the launch produced thousands of hurt virtual criminals, millions in contraband traffic, and tens of millions of dollars robbed or laundered, according to the company. An iPhone version is not yet released but is expected soon. Red Robot is also building a broader location-based gaming platform and intends to have three games completed by the end of the year, one of which will be developed by a third party. Financially, the company has just closed a new funding round to support the platform and additional games.
