Owkin

831 Broadway Unit 3R, New York, NY, 10003, United States

Overview

Owkin is a French-American startup that uses artificial intelligence to find the right treatment for every patient. Our focus is to use AI to discover and develop better treatments for unmet medical needs, starting with the fight against cancer. They use AI to identify new drug candidates, de-risk and accelerate clinical trials and build diagnostic tools that improve patient outcomes. Using federated learning, a pioneering collaborative AI framework, Owkin enables medical and biopharma partners to unlock valuable insights from siloed datasets, while protecting patient privacy and securing proprietary data. Owkin was co-founded by Thomas Clozel MD, a clinical research doctor and former assistant professor in clinical onco-hematology, and Gilles Wainrib, a pioneer in the field of machine learning in biology, in 2016. Owkin has raised over $255 million and became a ‘unicorn’ – a startup valued at more than $1 billion – in November 2021 through a $180 million investment from French biopharma company Sanofi.

Bioptimus is building large-scale foundational AI models trained on multimodal biological data to simulate biology from molecules to whole organisms and predict disease outcomes. The company launched H-Optimus-0, an open-source foundation model for pathology trained on millions of images to aid research and diagnosis of diseases such as cancer. Bioptimus plans to broaden its data sources across additional therapeutic areas and to deepen partnerships with pharmaceutical and biotech companies. It will leverage multimodal patient data amassed via ties to Owkin to train its models, while acknowledging the sensitivity and scale of the clinical data required. The company was founded last year by six co-founders, including CEO Jean-Philippe Vert and CTO Rodolphe Jenatton, and is based in France. Financially, Bioptimus has quickly raised capital, bringing total funding to $76M after its latest $41M round following a $35M seed raise. Bioptimus is building large foundational AI models tailored to biological and clinical data with the goal of improving disease diagnosis, precision medicine, and discovering new biomolecules. The company plans to train multimodal models on sensitive clinical datasets amassed through Owkin’s partnerships with academic hospitals. Bioptimus says building these biology models will be capital- and compute-intensive, requiring expensive GPUs and top AI researchers. The team includes Jean-Philippe Vert as co-founder and executive chairman (non-operational), Rodolphe Jenatton as CTO (formerly a senior research scientist at Google), and several co‑founders from Google DeepMind. Bioptimus has signed a partnership with Amazon Web Services to run model training in AWS data centers. The startup recently raised funding to begin model development and data work.

  • Tribun Health

    Participated · Series B · Sep 2023

Tribun Health’s core product is CaloPix®, an image-management platform that provides a digital alternative to traditional microscopy for anatomopathology. The company is advancing its Pathomix® project to broaden diagnostic product offerings and foster integration between healthcare services, research and pharmaceutical development. Pathomix® focuses on tools to consolidate, enhance, and exploit real-world histopathological and clinical data, including an advanced data query module for secondary use while adhering to GDPR and HIPAA. The project aims to ensure data interoperability and streamline connections between CaloPix® users (predominantly pathologists) and stakeholders involved in multicenter R&D. Tribun Health intends to leverage its existing CaloPix® customer network to automate extraction and export of data to support pharmaceutical laboratories and AI companies in assembling uniform cohorts for precision medicine. The company received public funding support that strengthens its market position amid global competition. Tribune Health provides laboratories and pharmaceutical organizations with a modular, end-to-end computational pathology platform that leverages AI for diagnosis, prognosis and drug development. Its platform is designed to empower physicians to deliver personalized and timely therapies and to help researchers accelerate development of new therapies. The company is led by CEO Jean-François Pomerol and is based in Paris, France. Tribune Health will use the new capital to expand sales and marketing activities in Europe and North America, bolster development efforts, and scale deployment resources to meet growing demand from hospitals and private labs. The funds also financed the recent acquisition of Keen Eye and will support enhancements to the Keen Eye EyeDo computational pathology platform to exploit secondary use of real-world oncology data for pharmaceutical and biotech purposes.
