Before Pacific Dental Services® officially started in 1994, so much work and effort went into learning how dental practices operate – from payroll and taxes, to implementing new technology and dealing with insurance companies. So really, the story starts before PDS even opened as a company.

Cyberdontics is building a robotic system to perform dental procedures—initially root canals—under dentist supervision. The system is designed for extremely accurate tooth cutting (around 30 microns) and much faster procedures, with the device intended to be in a patient’s mouth for under one minute and patients out the door about 15 minutes later. Its workflow uses a scan to create a virtual model of the tooth, then cuts the tooth and fabricates a prosthetic either concurrently or in advance so the piece fits like a puzzle. The company positions the robot as a way to expand access amid a dentist shortage. Cyberdontics plans to launch its imaging process within the next year and introduce the robot within the next two years, subject to regulatory approval. The company is led by dentist‑turned‑founder and CEO Chris Ciriello and is a YC graduate.
