STRAP Technologies has developed an integrated hardware and software wearable—worn on the chest—that guides blind and visually impaired users by calculating proximity to physical environments and conveying hazards via haptic language. After three years of R&D and extensive testing, the device warns of obstacles such as oncoming passers-by, walls, steps, and changing elevations. The company reports significant pre-orders from over 6,000 customers across North and Latin America and plans to begin shipping in Q4 2021. The device is available for pre-order at a promotional price of $500 USD with a $50 USD deposit required. STRAP’s stated mission is to increase independence and autonomy for visually impaired people by providing an alternative to the white cane.
