It operates large financial‑services offerings that include mobile wallets, international money transfers, loans and virtual credit cards. The business has been the subject of multiple external investments intended to fund growth and shore up Airtel Africa’s balance sheet. Proceeds from the latest transaction are earmarked to reduce debt and invest in network and sales infrastructure in operating countries. Airtel Africa reported strong Q1 2021 metrics, including a 24.6% increase in customer base to 23.1 million, a 64.4% rise in transaction value to $14.7 billion for the quarter ($59 billion annualized), and $124 million in Q1 revenue ($496 million annualized). AMC BV is controlled by Airtel Africa, which will retain a majority stake after the new investment. Airtel Mobile Commerce BV (AMC BV) is the mobile‑money business of Airtel Africa, providing mobile wallets, international money transfer, loans and virtual credit‑card services. The unit is described as one of the continent’s largest financial‑services operations and is valued at $2.65 billion on a cash‑and‑debt‑free basis. In 2019 Airtel and Mastercard enabled Airtel Africa’s roughly 100 million subscribers across 14 countries to access Mastercard’s global network. AMC BV is pursuing minority stake sales to raise cash, support asset monetisation and pursue a potential listing within four years. Recent activity includes a $200M investment from TPG’s Rise Fund and a new investment from Mastercard reported as $100M; Airtel has said it may sell up to 25% of issued share capital to additional investors. The company is also pursuing broader strategic measures, including asset sales and tower disposals, to aid debt reduction and investment plans.
