  • Apartment List

    Participated · Series C · Jan 2018

Apartment List operates an online rental marketplace that personalizes and curates available inventory to match renter preferences, surfacing real-time pricing and rent discounts. The platform hosts over 5.5 million units and reaches millions of renters each month. The company’s stated mission is to give renters a "personal concierge in their pocket" and help them find homes they love. This year Apartment List achieved profitability and accelerated revenue growth. Following its recent financing, the company plans to accelerate growth in its core marketplace, build curated insights for all renter segments, and develop flexible pricing options for properties. The move comes amid rising demand for rental technology as the pandemic pushed renters to rely more heavily on digital tools and a large, growing rental market with high renter mobility. Apartment List operates a fast-growing online rental marketplace that personalizes searches and lets renters book tours and communicate directly with landlords. The platform powers nearly 4 million listings (about 10% of U.S. rentals) and the company says it has reached more than 150 million users in over 40 cities since launch. Last year the company grew its property inventory by 50% and more than doubled the number of leases signed on its platform. Landlords pay Apartment List only when a lease is signed. Apartment List has formed partnerships with Facebook Marketplace, realtor.com, Homes.com and Doorsteps.com to expand reach. The company plans to broaden its inventory to include smaller apartment buildings and single-family homes and expects to double headcount in 2018. Apartment List operates a transaction-based marketplace that connects renters and landlords for long-term rentals. Launched in September 2011 by CEO John Kobs and COO Chris Erickson, the platform reaches more than four million renters each month and lists over 2.4 million apartments. It integrates directly with large owners and managers—including Greystar, Equity Residential, Avalon Bay, and Camden—to offer real-time unit availability, detailed amenities, and online tour booking. The company raised a $30M Series B to fund continued investment in the renter experience and geographic expansion. Apartment List plans to expand its presence into another 30+ metro areas and will use the capital to support that growth. Canaan Partners led the round and Rich Boyle of Canaan will join the company’s board. Apartment List provides an end-to-end apartment search experience via web and mobile apps, enabling users to find apartments and roommates and directly connect with landlords and property managers. The company has focused on richer listing detail, more photos and 3D floor plans to improve transparency for renters. It acquired RentAdvisor to add reviews to its listings. Apartment List emphasizes a strong mobile experience — about 65% of its monthly visits in January came from mobile devices — and reported roughly 2.2 million visits last month, targeting 5 million by year-end. The product roadmap includes expanding features beyond listings to allow signing contracts and paying rent through the platform, aiming to become a full renter-facing platform. Apartment List operates an online rental marketplace focused on apartment search, profiles and tenant reviews. The company recently acquired RentAdvisor and has already published the first batch of reviews from that deal. Funds will be used to expand product, engineering and sales teams and to improve the reach and quality of apartment profiles and reviews. Apartment List is building landlord outreach to increase listed inventory and aims to become an end-to-end renter platform covering search, lease signing and rent payments. Mobile now accounts for 57% of visitors and the team plans to launch an Android app in the coming weeks. The product roadmap includes higher-resolution photos, 3D floor plans and virtual tours, which the team expects users to see in 2014.
