Skin Scan is an iPhone medical app that takes a picture of a skin mole, analyzes fractal-like shapes with a proprietary algorithm, and assesses whether the mole appears to be developing normally or abnormally. The app runs on the iPhone camera only and is available on the Apple App Store. It asks for user location and is producing a live global map of mole assessments, which the company suggests could eventually map skin cancer rates if widely adopted. The team is about a dozen people and includes two dermatology doctors and two mathematicians; technical implementation is coordinated by Mihai Mafteianu of Cronian Labs in Romania. The company highlights plaudits from a handful of doctors on its site but the article notes uncertainty about camera accuracy and recommends consulting a doctor for confirmation. Financially, Skin Scan has secured €50,000 in seed funding from Seedmoney.
