Cancer Prevention Pharmaceuticals (CPP) develops pharmaco-prevention therapeutics designed to reduce the risk of cancer and other diseases. Its lead program, CPP-1X/sul (eflornithine plus sulindac), is in a randomized, double-blind Phase 3 trial (CPP FAP-310) for familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and has been granted orphan drug status by the FDA and EMA. The Phase 3 trial is fully enrolled, an Independent Data Monitoring Committee recommended continuation after a planned interim futility analysis, and the trial is expected to complete in 2018 unless there are extensions. CPP is co-sponsoring a large Phase 3 trial in colon cancer survivors with the NCI and SWOG and is collaborating with nonprofit groups on trials in neuroblastoma, gastric cancer, and early-onset type 1 diabetes. Financially, CPP has an ongoing collaboration with Sucampo that includes option payments and convertible-note investments tied to clinical milestones. Cancer Prevention Pharmaceuticals develops prevention drugs for people at elevated risk of colon cancer, centering on a lead combination of CPP-1X/sul (Eflornithine) with the NSAID sulindac. The two-drug regimen targets polyamine synthesis and inflammation, and early clinical trials reported a 92% reduction in recurrence of colon polyps most commonly associated with cancer, according to the company. CPP plans to initiate two pivotal clinical studies this year: one in patients with Familial Adenomatous Polyposis and another in colon cancer survivors. The Tucson, Arizona company was founded in 2009 by Dr. Frank Meyskens and Dr. Gene Gerner, and is led by CEO Jeffrey Jacobs. Financially, CPP is seeking $5 million in equity ahead of those pivotal trials, after completing a $2 million bridge financing last year and receiving grants from the Therapeutic Discovery Project, the Arizona Innovation Challenge and the Arizona BioIndustry Association’s Fast Start Award. Further down its pipeline are therapeutic approaches for prostate, breast and skin cancers that the company says will be developed with the National Cancer Institute.
