    Participated · Equity · Jun 2019

UltraSoC develops embedded analytics and monitoring technology delivered as semiconductor IP and software for systems-on-chip that power consumer electronics, computing and communications products. Its technology enables product designers to add cybersecurity, functional safety and performance-tuning features. The company counts customers including Seagate, C-SKY, Esperanto, Kraftway and Microchip. UltraSoC closed a £5m equity funding round to support growth and product development. The funds will be used to recruit hardware and software engineers at its Cambridge headquarters and Bristol design centre, open an engineering centre in Warsaw to develop data‑science and machine‑learning capabilities, expand its customer support engineering network globally, and increase commercial presence in key markets including Europe, the USA, Japan and China. The business is led by Chairman Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli and CEO Rupert Baines. UltraSoC provides a suite of semiconductor IP that enables chip designers to integrate an intelligent analytics infrastructure directly into device hardware. Its embedded analytics monitor and analyze real-world system behavior to reduce power consumption, increase performance, protect against malicious intrusions, and ensure product safety. The company serves a broad range of markets including automotive, IoT, at-scale computing and communications. Customers using its technology include HiSilicon (Huawei), Imagination Technologies, Movidius (now Intel), and Microsemi. Led by CEO Rupert Baines and based in Cambridge, UK, UltraSoC completed a £5m ($6.4m) funding round and plans to use the proceeds to continue deployment of its technology and realize its vision of embedding intelligent analytics capabilities into every chip. UltraSoC Technologies develops UltraDebug, an advanced on-chip debugging and monitoring technology for multiple-processor embedded systems used in applications from automotive to mobile phones. The product is designed to debug the application software that provides functionality and performance in modern electronic systems. The company positions its technology as addressing gaps left by incumbent debugging solutions as devices shrink and gain complexity. UltraSoC plans to develop the technology platform into a licensable product and to expand its technical and marketing capability in Cambridge. Financially, the company raised a £2m investment from Octopus Ventures in 2010 and previously closed a £400,000 seed round in 2009 from the South East Seed Fund and Iceni Seedcorn Fund. UltraSoC was founded in 2006 by Dr Karl Heeks and Professor Klaus McDonald-Maier and was spun out from the Universities of Kent and Essex in 2008.
