    Led · Seed · Feb 2012

Durham Graphene Science is a Durham University (UK) spin-out developing production technology for graphene. The company is building production equipment intended to enable mass production of graphene for use across automotive, aerospace, electronics and clean tech industries. DGS plans to use funding to scale up its production equipment and to establish joint development agreements with partners to test handling, dispersion and processing of the material across a wide variety of applications. The technology was developed from research by Dr Karl Coleman. Financially, the company has secured a £1.2m seed financing committed in two equal tranches, with the second tranche contingent on certain milestones being met. Durham Graphene Science is an R&D spinout from Durham University based on the research of Dr Karl Coleman that develops commercial graphene. The company’s core product is graphene produced via a new reactor process that grows the material atom-by-atom from a chemical “cloud.” That production process is protected by a patent application. The company intends to use recent funds to begin manufacturing graphene at scale to enable applications such as aircraft structures and advanced electronic components. The articles note graphene’s attributes—stronger and lighter than carbon fibre—and the company’s focus on scaling production to realize those applications. Durham Graphene Science is based in Durham, UK.
