Fluent Forever builds a personalized language-learning system that emphasizes ear training, visual aids and a spaced-repetition-like flashcard approach derived from founder Gabriel Wyner’s use of Anki. The product turns hand-built flashcards into an easier-to-use application and focuses on helping users think in a new language rather than rely on translation. It is a paid subscription service with a 14-day free trial and subscriptions starting at $10 per month. The company currently supports nine languages (Japanese, French, Russian, Mexican and Spanish Spanish, Italian, Korean, German and Brazilian Portuguese) with Dutch next on the roadmap. Fluent Forever struggled to raise capital in 2019 amid flat growth but saw growth pick up in 2020 and participated in Jason Calacanis’ Launch Accelerator. Future plans include integrating short live tutoring sessions with the online system so tutors help create personalized sentences that could become shared content.
