Macrometa is an edge computing cloud and global data network that enables developers to run backend services closer to mobile phones, browsers, smart appliances, connected cars and users in edge regions (points of presence). Its Global Data Network (GDN) reduces outages by allowing traffic to fail over between edge regions and integrates with Akamai Edge Workers via Macrometa’s console, API and SDK to deploy apps to Akamai’s 4,200 edge locations. The partnership with Akamai combines Akamai’s edge network, Linode cloud hosting and Macrometa’s GDN into a single platform for cloud developers. Macrometa highlights use cases including large latency improvements (25x to 100x) for SaaS, improved streaming data pipelines and real-time analytics for enterprises, geo‑fenced data vaults for compliance, and edge deployments for video, gaming and e‑commerce. Akamai led a new funding round in Macrometa with participation from Shasta Ventures and 60 Degree Capital, and Akamai Labs CTO Andy Champagne will join Macrometa’s board. Macrometa said it will use the funding for developer education, community development, enterprise event marketing and joint customer sales through Akamai. Macrometa is an edge computing service that combines a globally distributed NoSQL database and a low-latency stream data processing engine to let developers run data-heavy, real-time cloud applications. Its global data network runs across 175 points of presence (PoPs) and claims mean RTT under 50 milliseconds globally, 50x–100x faster than platforms like DynamoDB, MongoDB or Firebase. The company offers a self-service platform with a serverless database, pub/sug, event processing and a stateful compute runtime, and has partnered with Cloudflare Workers. Use cases include edge personalization for e-commerce, regionalized search, local data geo-fencing, global caching for SaaS surges and telecom data-ingest replacements for Splunk, Tibco and Apache Kafka. Macrometa plans to use its Series A to develop product features, acquire more enterprise customers, integrate with CDNs, cloud and telecom providers, and expand engineering and product centers globally. Headquartered in Palo Alto and founded in 2017, the company has raised $20M in this Series A and $29M in total since inception. Macrometa offers a globally distributed data service called Global Data Network that combines a distributed NoSQL database with a low-latency stream data processing engine. The platform lets developers run cloud apps and APIs across 175 edge regions, routing requests to the nearest region to reduce latency. Macrometa says requests can be processed in less than 50 milliseconds globally and claims performance that is 50 to 100 times faster than cloud platforms such as DynamoDB, MongoDB or Firebase. It differentiates itself by enabling developers to work with data stored across a global network of cloud providers rather than a single provider. The company was founded in 2018 by CEO Chetan Venkatesh and chief architect Durga Gokina. As 5G rollouts continue, Macrometa expects demand for globally distributed, serverless data computing—particularly for enterprise software—to increase, and the COVID-19 pandemic has boosted investor interest in cloud and edge services. The company recently added three board members and closed a $7M seed round.

Molecula offers a commercial version of the open-source data format Pilosa as a cloud-agnostic data layer for big data analytics, AI, and machine learning. Its platform continuously extracts and updates features into a centralized feature store, helping maintain consistency between training and inference. The company says its approach can reduce the data footprint by 60% to 90% and provides a secure format for sharing. Molecula provides a control plane for hybrid on-premises, cloud, and edge deployments, plus “data taps” that ingest and route source data and a framework to integrate third-party tools, libraries, models, and code. The startup is preparing a managed cloud service and will use recent proceeds to accelerate that launch and expand sales and marketing efforts. No operating-revenue or user metrics were disclosed in the article. Molecula is an enterprise software company providing a data virtualization platform that enables instantaneous, secure access to large, fragmented, and geographically dispersed datasets to support advanced analytics and machine learning workloads. Its core technology is built on the open-source project Pilosa and has been used by over 1,800 organizations globally. Clients include major brands in media, entertainment, technology, and healthcare, with key solutions deployed for real-time customer segmentation, real-time security and fraud detection, and accelerating BI and ML projects. Founded in 2017 and led by CEO H.O. Maycotte, Molecula is based in Austin, Texas. The company closed a $6 million seed round to accelerate its product roadmap and expand go-to-market efforts. Backers on the round included Seraph Group, Lontra Ventures, Velar Capital, Capital Factory, Andrew Busey and Jason Dorsey.
