Overview
Visa Europe is a payment technology business that enables millions of European consumers, businesses, and governments to make electronic payments. Its members are responsible for issuing cards, signing up retailers, and deciding cardholder and retailer fees. Almost 80% of Visa Europe’s business is on debit cards. There are 466 million Visa cards in Europe while 1 Euro in every 6.75 Euros spent in Europe is on a Visa card. Despite the challenging economic climate, total spend by Visa cardholders grew by 8.0% to 1.3 trillion Euros. Visa Europe employs 1,700 people on a permanent basis. It is able to respond quickly to the specific market needs of European banks and their customers, cardholders and retailers, and to meet the European Commission’s objective to create an internal market for payments. Visa Europe has invested over 1 billion Euros in technology and infrastructure over the past six years, building a European payments platform from which to deliver the next generation of payment technologies. All its transactions are based on the international EMV chip standard, which provides cryptographic security for payments today. Visa Europe is owned and operated by member banks and other payment service providers from 36 countries across Europe. Founded in 2004, it is based in London, the U.K.

Monitise is presented as a global leader in mobile technology and is developing a new technology platform. The company is deepening strategic partnerships to accelerate that platform’s development. Banco Santander, through its Santander Innoventures fund, acquired roughly a 5% stake to support this effort. Telefónica has also become an investor and strategic partner, and Mastercard has reconfirmed and expanded its investment. Monitise is furthering collaboration with IBM, including deployment of IBM Watson to support the new platform. Santander and Telefónica will jointly have the right to propose a non‑executive director to Monitise’s board. Monitise develops mobile banking and payments technology, including products branded Bank Anywhere, Pay Anyone and Buy Anything. The company provides technology and services to financial institutions and works with Visa Inc. and Visa Europe to deliver mobile-payment solutions. Its relationship with Visa covers a deployment footprint that reaches 3,000 banks in 36 countries and the company reports about $31 billion passes through its services annually. Monitise expanded its U.S. capabilities via the acquisition of Clairmail for $173 million. The company has an ongoing strategic commercial and investment relationship with Visa, which is a minority shareholder. Monitise provides mobile banking and mobile-money platform technology and partners with major payments firms to deliver mobile banking, payments and commerce services. The company has deepened its strategic ties with Visa Europe and plans to use new proceeds to expand into India, Asia Pacific, emerging markets and mobile commerce. Monitise announced a £24.7 million investment from Visa Europe and said Visa Europe’s president will join Monitise’s board, underscoring the strategic nature of the relationship. The company is also consolidating its U.S. presence by acquiring the remaining 51% of its Monitise Americas joint venture from Metavante. As part of that agreement, Metavante (a subsidiary of FIS) will receive a 3.3% stake in Monitise and the transaction is valued at $15 million. Management said the moves position Monitise to lead in North America as well as maintain its platform position in Europe.
