Overview
Wave Energy Scotland (WES) is driving the search for innovative solutions to the technical challenges facing the wave energy sector. Through our competitive procurement programme, we support a range of projects focused on the key systems and sub-systems of Wave Energy Converters. The aim is to produce reliable technology which will result in cost effective wave energy generation. WES was formed in 2014 at the request of the Scottish Government and is a subsidiary of Highlands and Islands Enterprise. The aim of WES is to ensure that Scotland maintains a leading role in the development of marine energy. Through our work, we have funded 84 contracts, invested £30.9m and been involved with 177 separate organisations, across 13 different countries.

Mocean Energy develops offshore power systems built on a decade of at-sea technology for power conversion, mooring, and controls. Its existing Blue Star system has completed 18 months of full-scale testing with international offshore energy companies and is forecast to see first sales in 2028. Mocean’s Blue Core concept combines wave energy, offshore solar, battery storage and on-board GPU racks to create modular offshore AI data center units that each generate about 500 kW–1 MW and connect via low-Earth-orbit satellites. The system targets primarily AI inference workloads and aims to reduce cooling energy to roughly 5% by exchanging heat with the ocean in a closed-loop system. Mocean plans an offshore demonstrator and early commercial deployments from 2030 and has a ten-year target of 6 GW of capacity. The company estimates the approach could avoid about 13 million tonnes of CO2 per year by 2035.
