1001Pharmacies operates an online marketplace that lets customers order pharmacy products through its website while partnering with hundreds of physical pharmacies to fulfill orders and handle deliveries, payments and listings. The company initially offered prescription deliveries but was forced last August to stop that service after a French court ruled prescription delivery illegal. In response it refocused on non-prescription goods — from toothpaste to vitamin C effervescent powder — and also offers click-and-collect at local pharmacies. Despite the regulatory setback, 1001Pharmacies raised €8 million ($8.9M) from investors, suggesting traction with its adjusted model. The marketplace approach reduces the need to manage large inventories and many scaling tasks of a typical e-commerce retailer. The company hopes to be able to sell prescription goods again in the near future but faces significant regulatory challenges in France.
