Overview
915 Labs develops and commercializes Microwave Assisted Thermal Sterilization (MATS), a patented microwave energy delivery system that rapidly heats and sterilizes packaged food to preserve flavor, texture and nutrients. The company pairs MATS with advanced packaging to enable additive-free, shelf-stable consumer packaged foods and other uses such as MREs and humanitarian rations. Pilot-scale MATS systems are deployed at a major CPG company and two co-packers, including Wornick Foods, where customers have developed and tested recipes. 915 Labs is building a commercial-scale MATS-150 system capable of processing 150 packages per minute, with construction slated to begin in early 2016 and MATS-processed foods targeted for store shelves in early 2017. Financially, the company completed a $3 million initial round of funding and reports total investment to date in the MATS technology, including R&D, of $25 million. The technology was developed at Washington State University, has patents filed (first filed in 2006) and is the only microwave sterilization process accepted by the U.S. FDA.
