Overview
A-MANSIA is a Belgian microbiome company founded in 2016 that develops health products built on the properties of the bacterium Akkermansia muciniphila. Its R&D is based on discoveries from Wageningen University and the University of Louvain, and the company controls a strong intellectual property portfolio stemming from patents developed by both universities. Preclinical studies showed daily administration of live A. muciniphila—and pasteurised A. muciniphila—improved metabolic disorders and inflammatory conditions in high-fat‑fed mice, with pasteurised bacterium exhibiting equal or greater beneficial effects. A first human exploratory study at Cliniques universitaires Saint‑Luc (Brussels) is ongoing and interim results indicate the product is safe and well tolerated. The company has identified active components isolated from A. muciniphila that can replicate beneficial properties and plans both a proprietary nutritional supplement commercial launch and a pharmaceutical discovery effort based on those components. The recent financing and grant are intended to advance these development programs.
